Nursing is multifaceted and highly skilled.
Nursing at the INI is guided by the needs of our national and international patients and their families. They are at the center of everything we do in nursing care. We align our nursing practice with the latest scientific evidence and continuously improve the quality of care. Standardized workflows, transparency and clear communication with different departments contribute to the optimal care of the patients in our hospital.
Why are you in good hands with us? Major surgery and severe illness require intensive monitoring and treatment. For this purpose, our intensive care unit provides fourteen intensive care bed spaces and our intermediate care unit six single rooms. Behind all the technology-driven equipment, we as intensive care nurses also stand for attentive and humane support for patients and their families. Our nursing team is a harmonious combination of long-serving staff and young, motivated nurses with new approaches. This diversity of perspectives strengthens our expertise and ensures a continuous exchange of knowledge and experience.
The focus of our work is the performance of neurosurgical procedures on the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and spine. At the center of everything we do are our patients, who have turned to the INI with concerns about their health in order to undergo a necessary surgical procedure. To offer our patients the most comprehensive care possible, we also perform procedures from the fields of ENT, reconstructive surgery, interventional neuroradiology and orthopedics. Six operating rooms are available for this purpose; two of them are hybrid operating rooms, each equipped with an intraoperative magnetic resonance scanner and a mobile CT unit. In all neurosurgical procedures on the central nervous system, close integration of pre- and intraoperative imaging with the navigation system is indispensable alongside surgical expertise in order to achieve optimal surgical results. Complex procedures on the central nervous system are planned in meticulous detail by the neurosurgeons using three-dimensional reconstruction of the affected brain regions and augmented reality techniques. The obligatory surgical microscope is firmly integrated into this flow of information. Through the use of navigation-assisted robotics, adaptive fluorescence and the transmission of electrophysiological measurements into the microscope's information system, the neurosurgeon receives all necessary data on the surgical situation at any given moment. This density of information is complemented by anesthetic monitoring adapted to the individual patient situation. The recording of somatosensory and motor potentials is standard practice, and affected cranial nerves can be included in neurophysiological monitoring as required. The members of our team see their task above all in providing skilled assistance as scrub nurses or circulating nurses in the operating room, but they also take on tasks that extend far into the technical field and into information gathering. Our practice instructors support new colleagues with and without operating room experience during the induction phase and beyond.
The reprocessing unit for medical devices (AEMP) is integrated directly into the operating room area. This gives us very direct and collegial communication and allows us, together with the specialists of the AEMP, to identify problems and to assemble instrument sets adapted to the situation at short notice. The induction period for nursing staff in operating room nursing services also includes assignments in the AEMP, in order to become familiar with the instruments and with the importance of impeccable reprocessing of medical devices.
Every operation requires an anesthetic team that administers and monitors the patient's anesthesia. Patients meet us before surgery and see us again when we receive them in the recovery room for further care after the operation. After the induction of anesthesia, we are continuously at work to ensure the safety of our patients. As maintaining the quality of anesthetic care has the highest priority at the INI, we provide continuous one-to-one care and therefore safe conditions for all patients in the operating room. At INI Hannover we are able to use state-of-the-art anesthesia, monitoring and diagnostic equipment for this purpose. A competent team of physicians and nurses with flat hierarchies and short lines of communication ensures that patients are always well cared for and that any complications arising during surgery can be addressed quickly and effectively. The very high quality of care is the central quality feature here and is also designed to meet the intercultural needs of our patients. Both this quality of care and the technology used every day are further developed through regular, professional and high-quality training and equipment instruction. For nursing staff in our anesthesia department we offer an attractive environment in which demanding tasks can be carried out in a structured manner and to a high standard. Our professionally trained practice instructors continuously refresh their knowledge in order to ensure the best possible induction of new team members and to provide appropriate advice at all times. In addition, we offer all employees the opportunity to acquire further qualifications and to develop personally, so that the whole team can do good work.

The task of diagnostic radiology and neuroradiology is to perform CT, MRI and X-ray examinations (projection radiography) as well as specialized neuroradiological examinations such as myelography. For each procedure, the optimal examination workflow is defined in consultation with the referring physicians. Highly complex conditions can be diagnosed thanks to the latest magnetic resonance imaging techniques.

Particular areas of focus of our department:
Neuro-oncological imaging requires, in addition to anatomical imaging, advanced MRI diagnostics with diffusion, perfusion and spectroscopy, in order to achieve a high level of diagnostic certainty in primary diagnosis and, during follow-up, to detect any recurrence at the earliest possible stage or to reliably assess the biological behavior of possible residual tumor components.
Neurofunctional imaging makes it possible, during preoperative planning, to identify the brain areas responsible for movement and speech, so that these can be optimally preserved during neurosurgical procedures. Multimodal imaging is used in surgical planning.
Differentiated imaging for neurodegenerative or dementia-related conditions, for inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system such as multiple sclerosis, and for epilepsy is performed to the highest diagnostic standards.
Neurovascular diseases such as aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVM) require particularly careful examination procedures and a differentiated assessment of the individual situation of the respective condition, taking the patient's personal circumstances into account. To clarify the questions that arise, we use computed tomography with the extended capabilities of CTA and its post-processing, magnetic resonance imaging with its particular capabilities for anatomical and functional imaging (perfusion, 3D angiography, DTI with fiber tracking and, where indicated, fMRI), and the extended capabilities of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) with microcatheter examinations.
Interventional Neuroradiology
The International Neuroscience Institute (INI) has a biplane angiography system with the option of 3D rotational angiography. This enables particularly differentiated forms of vascular imaging. The angiography system is integrated into the neurosurgical operating room, so that combined procedures (hybrid procedures) are also possible.

The neurophysiology team is responsible for neurophysiological diagnostics and for intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). Neurophysiological diagnostics include EEG, evoked potentials (SSEP, MEP, VEP, AEP), nerve conduction studies and electromyography. Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) serves to detect and preserve important neurological functions and nerve pathways.

Neuropsychology examines cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions of the brain.
