Professional Profile

Prof. Dr. med. Bahram Mohammadi is a neurologist with particular expertise in clinical neurophysiology, functional neuroimaging, neurodegenerative disorders, and advanced neurological diagnostics. Since 2011, he has headed the Department of Neurology at the INI – International Neuroscience Institute® in Hannover.

A major focus of his clinical work is the comprehensive neurological evaluation of complex disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems. His approach combines classical neurological assessment and advanced electrophysiological techniques with functional neuroimaging and modern neuroscientific methods.

Prof. Mohammadi studied medicine at Hannover Medical School (MHH). From 1999 to 2005, he completed his specialist training in neurology at the Department of Neurology under the direction of Prof. Reinhard Dengler. After obtaining his specialist certification in neurology in 2005, he continued working at MHH with particular focus on electrophysiology and neurodegenerative disorders.

From 2006 to 2010, Prof. Mohammadi served as an attending neurologist at the International Neuroscience Institute Hannover. He subsequently joined the Department of Neurology at University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck Campus, as a senior physician under Prof. Thomas F. Münte. In 2011, he returned to the INI Hannover and assumed leadership of the Department of Neurology.

Prof. Mohammadi received his medical doctorate from Hannover Medical School in 2000. His doctoral thesis investigated the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying paramyotonia congenita, using patch-clamp techniques to study the temperature-dependent characteristics of the disease.

His subsequent scientific work included experimental studies of the physiology and pharmacology of inhibitory ligand-gated ion channels. In 2006, he completed his habilitation at Hannover Medical School and was awarded the Venia Legendi in Neurology.

From 2006 to 2010, his research in clinical neuroscience was supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG). During this period, he helped establish a research group at the INI dedicated to functional neuroimaging in neurology, psychiatry, and psychology. In 2011, he was appointed Professor of Neurology.

A central clinical and scientific focus of Prof. Mohammadi’s work is functional brain imaging. At the INI, these methods are particularly used for preoperative diagnostics and functional brain mapping in neurosurgical patients. The objective is to identify functionally relevant brain regions and networks as precisely as possible before surgery and thereby support individualized surgical planning.

His additional clinical interests include neurodegenerative disorders, particularly motor neuron diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), as well as movement disorders, including Parkinsonian syndromes and dystonia.

Prof. Mohammadi also has extensive expertise in botulinum toxin therapy, including its use in dystonia, spasticity, hyperhidrosis, and chronic migraine.

Another major area of his work is clinical neurophysiology, including electromyography, nerve conduction studies, evoked potentials, and electroencephalography. These techniques provide detailed functional assessment of disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and muscles.

Prof. Mohammadi holds several recognized professional certifications, including certification in qualified botulinum toxin therapy from the German Society of Neurology and certifications from the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology and Functional Imaging in electromyography and electroneurography, evoked potentials, and electroencephalography.

He is a member of several national and international professional societies and scientific networks, including the German Society of Neurology (DGN), the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology and Functional Imaging (DGKN), the Organization for Human Brain Mapping (OHBM), and international research networks focusing on neuroimaging in ALS.

Under his leadership, the INI has developed numerous national and international scientific collaborations, including partnerships with Hannover Medical School, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck Campus, the University of Twente, and Imperial College London.

Prof. Mohammadi’s work combines clinical neurology, advanced neurophysiology, and functional neuroimaging. The objective is to achieve the most precise possible functional assessment of the nervous system and to translate these findings directly into individualized neurological and neurosurgical care.
