Prof. Dr. med. Christianto B. Lumenta

Prof. Dr. med. Lumenta is a highly experienced neurosurgeon with particular expertise in neuro-oncological and vascular neurosurgery as well as complex spinal surgery. Since June 1, 2018, he has served as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the INI – International Neuroscience Institute® in Hannover.

Prof. Lumenta completed his medical studies at the University of Bonn in 1976, receiving both his medical degree and doctorate. He subsequently underwent specialist training in neurosurgery at several institutions in Duisburg and Düsseldorf and also trained at the Department of Neurology associated with the former Max Planck Institute for Cerebral Circulation Research in Cologne-Merheim. He received his specialist certification in neurosurgery in 1983.

In 1985, Prof. Lumenta completed his habilitation at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. He was appointed C2 Professor in 1986 and Professor of Neurosurgery in 1992.

An important part of his international training took place in the United States. In 1986, he received a fellowship for advanced training in pediatric neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in Boston.

On September 1, 1992, Prof. Lumenta was appointed Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Klinikum Bogenhausen in Munich, an academic teaching hospital of the Technical University of Munich. Over more than two decades, he played a major role in shaping neurosurgical care within the hospital and the wider Munich clinical network.

From December 2011 onward, he additionally directed another neurosurgical department within the municipal hospital group in Munich, and from April 2016 he assumed responsibility for all neurosurgical departments within the organization. From 2000 to 2005, he also served as Deputy Medical Director and had previously been spokesperson for the institution’s Surgical Center for many years. He concluded his work within the Munich hospital group on May 31, 2018.

Since 2018, Prof. Lumenta has continued his neurosurgical work at the International Neuroscience Institute in Hannover. In addition, he continues to practice as an attending surgeon at InnKlinikum Altötting-Mühldorf. Prof. Lumenta also runs a private neurosurgical practice in Munich.

Prof. Lumenta has contributed substantially to the national and international development of modern neurosurgery. His particular contributions include advances in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, the development and application of clip technology in aneurysm surgery, and various dynamic and rigid fusion techniques in spinal surgery.

Accordingly, his principal clinical areas of expertise include brain tumor surgery, vascular neurosurgery, and complex spinal surgery. His surgical work is characterized by the treatment of demanding neurosurgical conditions with a strong emphasis on safety and the preservation of neurological function.

Based on his extensive clinical and scientific experience, Prof. Lumenta has been regularly invited as a speaker to numerous international scientific congresses and educational meetings. He has also contributed to worldwide educational activities of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS), particularly in the field of skull base surgery.

Prof. Lumenta has delivered more than 350 scientific and professional lectures worldwide. His academic work includes 99 original scientific publications, 35 book chapters, and five edited neurosurgical books.

He is a member of numerous national and international scientific societies, including the German Society of Neurosurgery, the German Academy of Neurosurgery, where he served in senior functions including Treasurer and later President, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), and the Academia Eurasiana Neurochirurgica, where he served as a board member.

His career combines decades of surgical experience, academic teaching, and international scientific activity, with particular expertise in the treatment of complex vascular and oncological disorders and advanced spinal surgery.
