Prof. Dr. med. Fedor Heidenreich

Prof. Dr. med. Fedor Heidenreich is an internationally recognized neurologist with longstanding clinical and scientific experience in general neurology and particular expertise in multiple sclerosis, clinical neuroimmunology, and neuromuscular disorders.

Today, Prof. Heidenreich serves as Senior Consultant in Neurology at the INI – International Neuroscience Institute®. He conducts regular outpatient consultations and provides neurological expertise for complex interdisciplinary clinical cases.

His clinical work covers the full spectrum of general neurology. Particular areas of expertise include multiple sclerosis and other immune-mediated disorders of the nervous system, myasthenia gravis and other neuromuscular diseases, polyneuropathies, Parkinson’s disease, and other movement disorders. He also has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cognitive disorders and dementias as well as cerebrovascular diseases.

Prof. Heidenreich studied medicine in Aachen, Mainz, and London. He subsequently spent two years as a research fellow in the laboratory of Prof. John Newsom-Davis at the Royal Free Hospital and the National Hospital, Queen Square, in London. His work there focused on neuromuscular and neuroimmunological disorders and established an early scientific interest that has remained central to his clinical and academic career.

He completed his specialist training in neurology at the Department of Neurology of the University of Düsseldorf under Prof. Hans-Joachim Freund. He was appointed Senior Physician in 1994 and completed his habilitation in neurology in 1995.

Prof. Heidenreich subsequently joined Hannover Medical School (MHH), where he served as Senior Consultant at the Department of Neurology under Prof. Reinhard Dengler.

From 2002 until July 2024, Prof. Heidenreich was Chief Physician of the Department of Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology at DIAKOVERE Henriettenstift Hannover. For more than two decades, he was responsible for comprehensive acute neurological care while also developing specialized outpatient services.

In addition to the treatment of acute neurological disorders and stroke, his major clinical areas of focus included multiple sclerosis and other immune-mediated diseases of the nervous system as well as Parkinson’s disease. During the later years of his tenure, he also established a department dedicated to early neurological rehabilitation.

His principal scientific interest is neuroimmunology, particularly multiple sclerosis. The close integration of clinical practice and scientific research in immune-mediated neurological diseases has shaped his professional work for many years.

Prof. Heidenreich holds certifications in electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) from the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology and Functional Imaging and has additional qualification in laboratory diagnostics in neurology.

He is a member of the German Society of Neurology (DGN), the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), and several other neurological professional societies. He has also been strongly committed to the care and support of patients with multiple sclerosis for many years. He serves as Chairman of the Lower Saxony Regional Association of the German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG) and is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of its national organization.

His work at the INI combines more than three decades of clinical neurological experience with particular expertise in neuroimmunology, multiple sclerosis, and complex neurological differential diagnosis. His expertise complements the INI’s diagnostic neurology program, particularly in patients with complex immune-mediated, neuromuscular, neurodegenerative, and cerebrovascular disorders.
