Prof. Dr. med. Gerd Peter Meyer

Prof. Dr. med. Gerd Peter Meyer is a renowned cardiologist and specialist in internal medicine with longstanding clinical, scientific, and leadership experience. His principal areas of expertise include cardiac imaging, preventive cardiology, interventional cardiology, structural heart disease, and intensive care medicine.

Following many years of collaboration with the INI – International Neuroscience Institute® Hannover, Prof. Meyer was appointed Director of Cardiology at the INI in April 2026. Under his leadership, the cardiology program is being expanded to provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient cardiovascular care. In addition to specialized cardiac diagnostics and treatment, particular emphasis is placed on the interdisciplinary management of patients with neurological and neurosurgical conditions.

Prof. Meyer studied medicine at Hannover Medical School (MHH) and completed additional periods of medical training in Austria, England, and the United States. He passed his medical state examination in 1992.

His doctoral thesis, which was awarded with distinction, focused on quantitative coronary angiography. In 2006, he completed his habilitation with research on intracoronary bone marrow cell therapy in patients following acute myocardial infarction, contributing to early clinical research into regenerative therapeutic strategies after myocardial infarction. In 2008, he was appointed Adjunct Professor of Internal Medicine at Hannover Medical School.

Prof. Meyer began his clinical and scientific career in the Department of Cardiology and Angiology at Hannover Medical School in 1992. He further specialized in advanced cardiac imaging during a fellowship at the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London under Prof. Dudley Pennell.

From 2001, he served as a Senior Physician in non-invasive and invasive cardiology at Hannover Medical School. Over the following years, he assumed senior responsibilities across several major areas of academic cardiovascular medicine, including echocardiography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging, emergency medicine, interventional treatment of adults with congenital heart disease, cardiac intensive care, and cardiac catheterization.

Prof. Meyer also played a major role in establishing the interventional heart valve program at Hannover Medical School. In 2009, the first transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) at MHH was performed with his involvement.

From 2009 to 2013, Prof. Meyer served as Chief Physician of the Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Pulmonology as well as Internal Intensive Care Medicine at Asklepios Klinik Altona in Hamburg.

After returning to Hannover, he initially worked in specialist cardiology practice and in 2016 founded the Kardiologikum Hannover, which he subsequently developed in close cooperation with the cardiac catheterization program at Hannover Medical School. Since 2019, Prof. Meyer has also served as a medical advisor to the Shenzhen Samii Medical Center.

His clinical expertise encompasses non-invasive and invasive cardiac diagnostics, echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging, coronary artery disease, structural heart disease, interventional cardiology, cardiovascular prevention, and intensive care medicine.

A particular focus of his work at the INI is cardiovascular prevention and risk stratification. Advanced imaging and individually tailored diagnostic strategies are used to identify cardiovascular risk factors and disease at an early stage and to initiate targeted preventive and therapeutic measures.

Prof. Meyer is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiology and holds additional advanced qualifications in specialized internal intensive care medicine, magnetic resonance imaging, and interventional cardiology.

At the INI, Prof. Meyer combines preventive cardiology, advanced cardiac imaging, and interventional expertise with the interdisciplinary care of complex patients. Cardiology therefore complements the INI’s core neurosciences profile with an important cardiovascular dimension and supports an integrated approach to neurological and cardiovascular disease.
