Prof. Dr. med. habil. Jörg Siegfried Bleck

Prof. Dr. med. habil. Jörg Siegfried Bleck is a renowned specialist in internal medicine and an acknowledged expert in clinical, interventional, and technological ultrasound. His particular expertise combines broad-based training in internal medicine with decades of experience in advanced ultrasound diagnostics, complex laboratory diagnostics, and interventional sonography.

Since March 2022, Prof. Bleck has served as Director of the Ultrasound Center and Medical Director of Internal Medicine at the INI – International Neuroscience Institute® Hannover. In this role, he is responsible for internal medicine consultation and care for both inpatients and outpatients at the INI and directs the institute’s specialized ultrasound diagnostics.

Prof. Bleck studied medicine at Hannover Medical School (MHH) from 1979 to 1986 and received his medical license in 1986. Following service as a medical officer in the German Armed Forces, he headed the Cyclosporine Research Group within the Department of General Pharmacology at Hannover Medical School from 1987 to 1988 under Prof. Sewing, in cooperation with the Department of Transplantation Surgery under Prof. Rudolf Pichlmayr.

In 1988, he received his medical doctorate from Hannover Medical School with highest distinction. He subsequently began his specialist training in internal medicine at MHH, initially under Prof. Friedrich Wilhelm Schmidt and later under Prof. Michael P. Manns. His training covered an exceptionally broad spectrum of internal medicine, including angiology, oncology, cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and nephrology including dialysis medicine.

Prof. Bleck became board-certified in internal medicine in 1996 and completed his habilitation in Internal Medicine at Hannover Medical School in 1999. In 2001, he was appointed Executive Senior Physician in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at MHH. He subsequently obtained board certification in gastroenterology in 2003.

From 2005 to 2007, Prof. Bleck served as Chief Physician of the First Department of Internal Medicine at Johanniter Hospital Genthin-Stendal, with responsibility for gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, and geriatrics. From 2008 to 2019, he headed the hospital’s Interdisciplinary Ultrasound Center. From 2019 to 2021, he served as Medical Director of the Interdisciplinary Ultrasound Center at the Helios Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Northeim.

A major focus of his scientific career has been clinical ultrasound, technological innovation in sonography, and interventional ultrasound.

Prof. Bleck developed and established innovative approaches to ultrasound imaging, including parametric ultrasound, daylight-compatible ultrasound visualization through “Photopic Imaging,” and methods based on adaptive learning filters, which contributed to the technological development of modern ultrasound systems.

In recognition of this work, he received the Terrence Matzuk Memorial Award of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) in 1991 for outstanding technological development.

His scientific work includes more than 100 scientific publications, numerous book chapters, and a large number of scientific presentations at national and international congresses.

In 2004, Prof. Bleck was awarded DEGUM Level III in Internal Medicine, the highest qualification level of the German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine. He also serves as an instructor in ultrasound training for the Medical Association of Lower Saxony.

His clinical expertise includes comprehensive internal medicine diagnostics as well as ultrasound of internal organs and blood vessels, Doppler and duplex sonography, contrast-enhanced ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided diagnostic and interventional procedures.

At the INI, Prof. Bleck combines broad expertise in internal medicine with highly specialized ultrasound diagnostics and technological experience. In doing so, he makes an important contribution to the interdisciplinary assessment of complex patients and to comprehensive internal medical care within the INI.
