Prof. Dr. med. Peter M. Vogt

Prof. Dr. med. Peter M. Vogt is an internationally renowned plastic, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgeon with particular expertise in reconstructive microsurgery, hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, burn medicine, and the functional and aesthetic reconstruction of complex tissue defects.

From October 1, 2026, Prof. Vogt will serve as Director of the Department of Plastic, Aesthetic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the INI – International Neuroscience Institute® Hannover. A particular focus is close interdisciplinary collaboration with neurosurgery and the other surgical specialties at the INI, especially in complex reconstruction following tumor surgery and trauma, difficult wound conditions, and disorders or injuries of peripheral nerves.

Education and Academic Career

Prof. Vogt studied medicine at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, where he also received his medical doctorate. He completed his surgical training at Lübeck University Hospital and Hannover Medical School (MHH). His broad surgical education included visceral and transplantation surgery under Prof. Rudolf Pichlmayr, trauma surgery under Prof. Harald Tscherne, and cardiothoracic and vascular surgery under Prof. Hans Georg Borst. He became board-certified in surgery in 1991.

He subsequently specialized at the Department of Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery and Severe Burns at Bergmannsheil University Hospital, Ruhr University Bochum, under Prof. Hans Ulrich Steinau. In 1994, he became board-certified in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, followed by additional qualifications in Hand Surgery in 1996 and Specialized Intensive Care Medicine in Plastic Surgery in 1998.

As part of a research fellowship, Prof. Vogt worked at Harvard Medical School in Boston and as a Research Fellow in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital under Prof. Elof Eriksson.

He completed his habilitation in Plastic Surgery at Ruhr University Bochum in 1994 and was appointed Adjunct Professor there in 1999. In 2001, he accepted the Chair of Plastic, Aesthetic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at Hannover Medical School. In 2005, he declined a call to the University Professorship of Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Zurich.

From 2006, Prof. Vogt served as Director of the newly established Department of Plastic, Aesthetic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at Hannover Medical School. From 2020, he additionally served as Chairman of the Surgical Center at Hannover Medical School.

Clinical Expertise

Prof. Vogt’s clinical expertise encompasses plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, reconstructive microsurgery, hand surgery, and peripheral nerve surgery.

A particular focus is the restoration of form and function using the patient’s own tissue following major trauma, burns, tumor surgery, and congenital malformations. This includes complex microsurgical tissue transfer as well as reconstructive procedures involving skin, soft tissue, muscle, bone, and nerves.

Prof. Vogt has particular expertise in peripheral nerve surgery, including disorders and injuries of the brachial plexus, as well as procedures designed to restore function following nerve paralysis. His clinical spectrum also includes comprehensive hand surgery and modern aesthetic surgical procedures.

At the INI, the integration of reconstructive microsurgery, hand and peripheral nerve surgery with neurosurgery is of particular importance.

Research and Scientific Work

Prof. Vogt’s principal scientific interests include wound healing, reconstructive surgery, burn medicine, regenerative biology, and tissue engineering. His research encompasses the regeneration and replacement of skin, adipose tissue, muscle, blood vessels, nerves, and bone, as well as angiogenesis and cell-based therapeutic approaches.

A central objective of his scientific work is the translation of new biological and technological concepts into clinical reconstructive surgery. Prof. Vogt is the author and co-author of numerous scientific publications and book chapters and has contributed to a wide range of clinical and experimental research projects.

National and International Scientific Leadership

Prof. Vogt has held numerous senior leadership positions in major national and international professional societies. Among others, he has served as President of the German Society for Burn Medicine, the German Society for Wound Healing and Wound Treatment, and the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (DGPRÄC).

From 2013 to 2015, he served as President of the European Burns Association (EBA) and from 2014 to 2015 as President of the German Society of Surgery (DGCH). In 2019, he became a Senator of the German Society of Surgery.

His international memberships include the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the European Association of Plastic Surgeons, the International Society for Burn Injuries, the Plastic Surgery Research Council, USA, and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is or has also been a member of numerous German professional societies in plastic surgery, general surgery, trauma surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, senology, and burn medicine.

Prof. Vogt has been invited for visiting professorships and academic appointments at internationally renowned institutions including Harvard Medical School, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the Shriners Burn Center at the University of Texas in Galveston, and the University of California, Irvine, as well as universities and specialized centers in Belgrade, Baku, and Kuwait.

His scientific achievements have been recognized with numerous national and international awards, including the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation Grant Award, the Joseph E. Murray Resident Award, the Von Langenbeck Award of the German Society of Surgery, the Innovation Award of the German BioRegions, and the Edgar Ungeheuer Award. In 2014, he was invited to deliver the prestigious Mowlem Lecture of the British and European plastic surgery societies.

At the INI, Prof. Vogt combines reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, microsurgery, hand surgery, and peripheral nerve surgery with decades of academic surgical experience and translational research. His work focuses on achieving the best possible restoration of function and form through individualized treatment and modern, tissue-preserving surgical techniques.
