Prof. Dr. med. Rudolf Fahlbusch

Prof. Dr. med. Rudolf Fahlbusch is internationally recognized as one of the most experienced and renowned specialists in the field of endocrine neurosurgery. His clinical and scientific work focuses on disorders of the pituitary gland and hypothalamic region, particularly pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, and other complex tumors of the sellar region.

Throughout his career, Prof. Fahlbusch has operated on and provided pre- and postoperative care for more than 4,000 patients with pituitary tumors. His particular expertise encompasses the entire spectrum of interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of endocrine neurosurgical disorders – from specialized endocrinological and ophthalmological diagnostics to surgical treatment, medical therapy, radiotherapy, and structured long-term follow-up.

A major focus of his surgical work is the use of minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques for procedures involving the pituitary gland and skull base. Surgery in the pituitary and hypothalamic regions requires exceptional microsurgical experience and precision due to the immediate proximity of the optic pathways, blood vessels, hormonal regulatory centers, and other highly sensitive structures.

Prof. Fahlbusch is also internationally recognized as a pioneer in the technological advancement of neurosurgery. From an early stage, he promoted the integration of engineering, computer technology, functional neuronavigation, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, and intraoperative imaging into neurosurgical procedures. The development and implementation of advanced surgical concepts incorporating computer-assisted navigation and intraoperative imaging have been defining elements of his scientific and clinical work.

After studying medicine in Göttingen and Munich, Prof. Fahlbusch completed his neurosurgical training at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU). He completed his habilitation in neurosurgery in 1977 and was appointed Professor of Neurosurgery at LMU Munich in 1980.

From 1982 to 2005, he served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Under his leadership, the department developed into an internationally renowned center for neurosurgery. Among his major achievements there were the establishment of innovative concepts in pituitary surgery, image-guided neurosurgery, and interdisciplinary neurological and neurosurgical care.

Since 2005, Prof. Fahlbusch has served as Director of the Center for Endocrine Neurosurgery at the International Neuroscience Institute (INI) Hannover.

At the INI, patients with disorders of the pituitary gland and hypothalamic region are treated within an interdisciplinary framework involving, in particular, endocrinology, ophthalmology, neuroradiology, and radiation oncology. Each patient receives an individualized assessment of the available therapeutic options. Depending on the specific condition, treatment may include surgery, medical therapy, radiotherapy, or a carefully monitored conservative approach.

Prof. Fahlbusch is a member and honorary member of numerous national and international scientific societies. Among other distinctions, he is an Honorary Member of the German Society of Endocrinology, a member of the advisory board of Netzwerk Hypophyse, and a board member of the Craniopharyngioma Forum.

His scientific and clinical work represents the combination of decades of surgical experience, highly specialized endocrine neurosurgery, and the consistent integration of modern technologies, with the aim of providing treatment that is both maximally precise and as gentle as possible.
