Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Bosch

Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Bosch is an internationally renowned orthopaedic and trauma surgeon and sports medicine specialist with particular expertise in joint surgery, sports traumatology, and reconstructive and degenerative musculoskeletal surgery. His principal clinical and scientific interests include disorders and injuries of the knee and shoulder as well as innovative approaches to the treatment of articular cartilage damage.

Since 2003, Prof. Bosch has headed the Center for Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Traumatology at the INI – International Neuroscience Institute® Hannover. The center provides a comprehensive spectrum of modern conservative and surgical treatments for musculoskeletal injuries and disorders.

His principal clinical areas of expertise include disorders and injuries of the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, and ankle. The surgical spectrum includes arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery, reconstructive joint surgery, joint replacement, and revision arthroplasty.

A central principle of his surgical approach is the preservation or restoration of natural joint function whenever possible. Tissue-preserving surgical techniques, modern implants, and individually tailored treatment strategies are combined with targeted physiotherapy and specific postoperative rehabilitation protocols.

Prof. Bosch studied medicine and received his medical doctorate from the University of Tübingen in 1984 for experimental research into cerebral energy metabolism. His subsequent clinical and scientific career took him to Hannover Medical School (MHH), where he worked for many years in the Department of Trauma Surgery and ultimately served as a senior attending surgeon.

He completed his habilitation at Hannover Medical School in 1993 and was appointed Adjunct Professor at MHH in 1997.

Prof. Bosch attracted particular international attention in 2002 with a medical world first. Together with his team at Hannover Medical School, he performed the first implantation of an artificial cartilage replacement in the human knee joint. This minimally invasive procedure represented an innovative approach to the treatment of localized cartilage defects with the aim of preserving the natural knee joint for as long as possible.

His scientific work has focused particularly on injuries and disorders of the knee and shoulder, ligament and tendon reconstruction, cartilage damage and cartilage replacement, and the biological and biomechanical principles underlying joint reconstruction.

Prof. Bosch has received several national and international awards for his scientific work. In 1991, he received the prestigious Albert Trillat Young Investigator’s Award for outstanding experimental research related to the knee. In 1998, he was awarded the Jenö Manninger Medal as well as the Excellence in Research Award. Further distinctions include the DonJoy Award.

Prof. Bosch is board-certified in surgery as well as orthopaedics and trauma surgery and holds an additional qualification in sports medicine. His career combines extensive surgical experience with scientific research and the continuous development of joint-preserving and reconstructive treatment strategies.

At the INI, Prof. Bosch represents highly specialized, individualized joint surgery and sports traumatology, with the objective of reducing pain, restoring stability and mobility, and preserving natural joint function whenever possible.
