Professional Profile
Prof. Dr. med. Helmut Bertalanffy is internationally recognized as one of the leading experts in vascular neurosurgery, microsurgery of complex brainstem lesions, and skull base surgery. For decades, his clinical and scientific work has focused on the surgical treatment of particularly challenging neurovascular and deep-seated intracranial disorders.
Prof. Bertalanffy completed his neurosurgical training at Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg under the direction of Prof. Wolfgang Seeger. He received his medical doctorate in 1986 and obtained his specialist certification in neurosurgery in 1990.
As a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Prof. Bertalanffy spent more than two years, from 1990 to 1992, at the Department of Neurosurgery of Keio University in Tokyo. His principal scientific interests during this period included cerebral and spinal microcirculation as well as skull base surgery. This extensive period of scientific and surgical training in Japan had a major influence on his subsequent development in complex microsurgical neurosurgery.
After returning to Germany, Prof. Bertalanffy became Senior Attending Neurosurgeon at the Department of Neurosurgery of RWTH Aachen University under Prof. Joachim Gilsbach. He completed his habilitation in neurosurgery in 1994 and, in the same year, received the Friedrich Wilhelm Award of RWTH Aachen University for outstanding scientific achievements.
At the end of 1996, Prof. Bertalanffy received the call to the Chair of Neurosurgery at Philipps University Marburg. From 1997 to 2007, he served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. He subsequently accepted a call to the University of Zurich, where he served as Professor and Director of the Department of Neurosurgery from 2007 to 2010.
In November 2010, Prof. Bertalanffy joined the International Neuroscience Institute (INI) Hannover, where he established the Department of Vascular Neurosurgery and has served as its Director ever since.
His surgical practice focuses on highly complex cerebral and spinal vascular disorders, including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations, and other vascular lesions. Another major area of expertise is the microsurgical treatment of complex lesions involving the brainstem and skull base, procedures that demand exceptional microsurgical precision and extensive surgical experience.
Based on his clinical and scientific contributions, Prof. Bertalanffy is regularly invited as a speaker, visiting surgeon, and academic faculty member to leading neurosurgical centers, international congresses, workshops, and scientific symposia around the world.
He is a member of numerous prestigious national and international professional societies and scientific academies, including the German Society of Neurosurgery, the Swiss Society of Neurosurgery, the German Academy of Neurosurgery, the World Academy of Neurosurgery, and the Academia Eurasiana Neurochirurgica. He has also held several responsibilities within the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS), including serving as former Chair of its Nominating Committee. In addition, he is a member of the International Advisory Board of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), a corresponding member of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, and an Honorary Member of the Romanian Society of Neurosurgery.
In addition to his clinical work, Prof. Bertalanffy has played an important role in international neurosurgical publishing. He has served as Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Neurosurgical Review and has acted as a scientific reviewer for several leading international neurosurgical journals.
His scientific work includes more than 150 original peer-reviewed publications, over 50 book chapters, and numerous additional scientific contributions. He has also delivered more than 300 scientific lectures at congresses and symposia worldwide.
Prof. Bertalanffy’s clinical and scientific work represents the combination of exceptional microsurgical precision, extensive neurovascular expertise, and decades of international academic experience. His work is dedicated to the safe treatment of the most complex vascular and deep-seated neurosurgical disorders while preserving neurological function to the greatest extent possible.
